Question: No superbowl party, no nothing?

I’m a nice person. I’m never rude to anyone and always willing to help. I probably wear my heart on my sleeve too much and I am not the world’s most interesting person. I don’t have a hobby I’m passionate about. I take care of my home and do my job. Most people think I am funny.

I never get invited anywhere. My husband and I have no friends. He is like me. Everyone thinks he is a nice guy. He has fewer interests than me and is not much of a conversationalist – probably neither one of us are. We live in a highly educated and affluent area where everyone is a marathoner/mountain biker/cyclist/extreme sports nut or some other passionate hobby, so we seem dull by raising our kids and working on our home, I guess.

Any advice as to how to make some friends?
Please don’t suggest becoming an extreme athlete. I do not have time with 3 kids.

Answer: just do what you are doing. you have a friend in your kids and hubby. about the game sit and have a party with your family. that is all you need.

The Rochester Fair Grounds have been the site for the Olmsted County Fair for a number of years, and the residents have come to love it. Traditionally, the fair runs the last week of July/first week of August, and lasts for a week. There are a number of events that fairgoers have come to expect each year from the county celebration, but also enough new attractions to add a bit of variety. A new feature this year of the fair that many fairgoers will approve of is a smoking ban. The Fair goes smoke-free this year, following in the footsteps of Minnesota’s statewide smoking ban.

Some of the attractions that can be seen at the Olmsted Fair include:

- Carnival rides: Both kids and adults can find enjoyable and fun in the carnival section of the fair. A number of rides and games await people of all ages. There are many chances to win prizes, and many rides to quench your thirst for excitement.

- Midway: Along the midway, one can find a wide variety of attractions. Besides the endless line of food vendors, there are a number of buildings housing animals, arts and crafts, food, and collectibles. Covering everything can take some time, but it is worth it to see the creativity and hard work people put into their hobbies.

- Animals: A favorite of many young fairgoers is the animal section of the fair. Cows, horses, sheep, goats, rabbits, and many other animals are brought to the fair for display and judging. Shows and judging occurs throughout the week.

- Daily Entertainment: Throughout the daytime hours of each one, one can find a wide variety of entertainment. Some examples include live bands, magic shows, vaudeville acts, and comedy shows.

- Grandstand: Each night of the week at the fair there is a different event at the main grandstand. In 2008, the shows included an antique tractor pull, a modern tractor pull, a rodeo, bull riding, two demolition derby, and professional wrestling. The events are well attended, and offer a bit of excitement to the end of a nice summer day.

Residents and visitors alike have come to love the excitement and enjoyment that the Olmsted County Fair brings to Rochester. Without a doubt, the Fair will continue to be a major summer attraction. It could be the food or the farm animals. It could be the chance for people to show their hobbies and talents to the community. It could be any number of things, but in the end, the buzz of excitement is most likely caused by the chance for people of all ages to be a kid again.

Question: What are the tax benefits to startings a farm or orchard?

My wife and I love our jobs but are paying 33% annually in taxes. We would like to start an orchard and have found the perfect land that is ready to go. We know the yeild we need to make to get a ROI. However… are there tax benefits to starting a farm/orchard? Also what would be the best loan for first time farmers like us who will be doing it as a hobby (20 acres)
When I say hobby I am referring to the fact that it will not be greater than 100 acres for at least the first 5 years. I was told that sub 100 acre farms are considered hobby. However, please keep in mind that i do plan to make a profit on this venture.

Answer: There are no tax benefits for a hobby. At best, a hobby is an (almost) break-even enterprise for tax purposes.

A hobby farm is not a business. You will put your gross hobby income on Line 21 of Form 1040. You can deduct expenses only up to the amount of your hobby income, as a miscellaneous deduction subject to 2% of your AGI, on Schedule A. You cannot take a loss on hobby income, and so you will not be able to reduce your income and taxes owed.

You can deduct the real estate taxes on the land on Schedule A as well, without having a profit motive for the farm.

You would take out a personal loan for the farm, perhaps secured by the land or other assets. You would not have a business loan for a hobby. If your loan was secured by your home, you may be able to deduct the interest on a loan of up to $100K on Schedule A.

If you reconsidered this enterprise and decided it was going to be a business with a profit motive, you would use Schedule F to figure your profit and loss from farming activities. You may be able to claim a loss for two or three years, but unless you showed a profit after three years, your business would be converted to a hobby by the IRS and you would have to refigure your taxes based on the hobby income rules as summarized above.
