About Ant Farming

Ant Farming is an educational hobby. With Ant Farming as a hobby, you will be able to observe and learn ant behavior. Ant colonies are fascinating to watch and there are many things people could learn from ants. Ant farming is a new type of hobby and the word “Ant Farm” was a registered trademark of Uncle Milton Industries Inc, a toy manufacturer founded in 1946.

Ants have been around since the dawn of time and there are currently almost 12,000 known species of ants. The oldest ant was discovered fossilized and encased in amber in New Jersey approximately 92 million years ago.

What you need to start ant farming as a hobby

To start ant farming, you will need ants (of course) and an ant farm or formicarium which you can either make one yourself or buy one. You can buy a plastic ant farm or build one out of wood, plaster, or plastic yourself. Then you can add sand or dirt to your ant farm as well as ant food. Again, you can either make your own ant food or buy some.

Caution: some ant species sting such as fire ants and harvester ants so be careful when handling your ants.
