Table tennis (also called Ping Pong) is a hobby and a sport that is very popular in Asia. Table tennis originated in England in the 1880s as an after-dinner amusement for upper-class Victorians. Table tennis is an indoor hobby or game that you can play alone, in pair, or with three other people (doubles). Table tennis is like a miniature version of tennis but with slightly different rules. If you don’t like running in a big court but love racquet sports then you might enjoy playing table tennis more than playing tennis.

What do I need to play table tennis as a hobby?

To start playing table tennis as a hobby, you will need to have or gain access to a table tennis table. You often find one in a gym, health club, or a community center. Most of the time they are free to use and you can even borrow the table tennis paddles (bats) and balls. You can also buy foldable table tennis table for quite cheap nowadays.

Then you need to have a good table tennis paddle. There is a big difference between a good one and a cheap one. You can control and spin the ball much better with a good table tennis paddle. The cheap ones you usually cannot spin much with.

To play table tennis, you need to know the rules which you can find in books. Then you can get a partner to play with or you can play by yourself against a wall or the second half of the table tennis folded upward.
