How popular is bridge as a hobby?

Very popular. For some people playing bridge borders on an obsession.

What is bridge?

Bridge is one of the most popular card games in the world, more so in some parts of the world and in some cities than others.

It has elements of skill and chance. It is also a very social game. People meet with their friends for an evening of Bridge, clubs exist where people go to play Bridge and thousands of tournaments are held every year.

Who play bridge? & how to play bridge?

Bridge is played by a foursome, consisting of two sets of partners. The jokers are removed from the deck and all the remaining cards are dealt. The players then bid for the right to play the hand. As they do so, each player tries to convey to his partner what cards he is holding and how strong is hand is. There are bidding conventions to establish this.

Once a player has won the bid, that person plays the hand for himself and his partner who is called the “dummy.” The player tried to take the number of tricks the partnership bid and if he does not do so, they are “set.” The result is scored using a complicated scoring system. Multiple hands make up a game. Since there are almost endless variations, Bridge is a game of lasting interest for many. Hundreds of books have been written on Bridge and reading a simple one is a good way to start.
