Baseball cards started in early 1900s mostly as a way to promote the sale of chewing tobacco. The baseball players pictures were taken and attached to a small pic of cardboard with some interesting facts about the player.
Information on the baseball cards included the:
- height
- weight and
- baseball statistics such as:
- batting average,
- runs batted in,
- Home Runs etc etc.
During this early stage of professional baseball very few base ball cards were produced and now have a great value when they can be found. During the years baseball card collecting grew with the popularity of baseball and many many companies began producing different series of cards. The market became over populated with cards in the early 2000’s causing some of the card producing companies to stop manufacturing cards for financial reasons.
