Many people love to make quilts. It is an art, a culture as well as a social occasion to get together with your friends to make quilts together. There are many reasons why people make quilts. Some do it as a tradition, some do it for fun as a hobby, and some do it to donate to charitable organizations and people in need. In fact, there are many nonprofit organizations that collect or make quilts and donate them to homeless people, seniors, hospitalized folks, and so on. People who are losing hope in life are very happy to receive quilts because they know that someone put a lot of work into the quilts for them so someone cares. Quilting also makes good fund raising projects.

What is quilting?

Quilting is the work of making a quilt which is often used as a decorative cover for a bed but it can be used as a blanket too. It usually has two layers with soft material between them. Quilting is a sewing method done either by hand, by sewing machine, or by a longarm quilting system. A person who takes on quilting as an occupation is called a quilter.

The process of quilting uses a needle and thread to join two or more layers of material together to make a quilt. Typical quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. The quilter’s hand or sewing machine passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire piece where quilting is wanted. A straight or running stitch is commonly used and these stitches can be purely functional or decorative and elaborate. Quilting is done on bed spreads, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Quilting can make a project thick, or with dense quilting, can raise one area so that another stands out.

You might think that it is crazy that installing air conditioning units or anything involving installing something could possibly be viewed as a hobby. But, it is really a hobby for some people. Read on to see why this is true.

It is very hot in some parts of the country. There are many organizations that help low income families and seniors with air conditioners. The AC units are donated and these organizations need volunteers to install them in people’s homes. If you have time and want to do something good and charitable with your time then volunteering to install AC units in homes is a possibility.

Most of the time, you do not need to have any specialized knowledge of how to install air conditioning units. They are easy to install. You just have to be willing to drive (not having to pay for gas yourself or even use your own car) to people’s homes and put them up. Most of the time, you will be with someone who knows exactly what to do.

When it is very hot, people can have heat stroke and in some cases they can even die so installing AC units for them can even save lives. While the AC units are donated, these organizations cannot do anything if they do not have volunteers to help them. You can make volunteering your time to install AC units your hobby and do it whenever you have time such as weekends and evenings.

Donating Used Items

Donating used items that you have lying around your house can be fun if you start doing it. Many people do not know that it could be fun but soon after they try, they get addicted to doing it and want to do it more and more. Why? Because, by donating things that you do not need or want any more, you can make a difference in at least one person’s life. After all, we are not talking about donating money or something that you need or use. Most people do not want to donate money because they need money, especially when the economy is in a bad shape like it is now. But, most people do have stuff in their homes that are just there collecting dust.

Wouldn’t it be great if you can get rid of them and make room in your home for something else more special to you?

Also, when you get rid of things that you have not used for a while, you get lots of dust out of your home, making it easier to breathe and keep clean. Your life will be better as a result of it.

At the same time, you get to give your stuff to someone in need. Most people love knowing that they have made a difference in someone’s life – no matter how small. People receiving the stuff will be thankful and it is nice to feel thanked and appreciated especially when it is no efforts.

Therefore, a lot of people have taken up this hobby: donating things they have in their homes that they do not use. Some of them try to sell them first and donate what they cannot sell. Either way, it is a great hobby for some.

Pet Fostering

If you are looking to work with animals and have room in your home, you can sign up to foster a pet. There are many pets that were rescued and now need foster homes. Foster homes are needed for pets that are waiting to be adopted because rescue shelters are often full and have no more room for pets but they do not want them killed or let loose either.

Sometimes more foster homes are needed than others. For example, in May-June when it’s kitten season, animal or pet rescue shelters are usually full and need volunteers to take care of some kittens and cats short term until they are ready for adoption.

Should I foster a pet as a hobby?

Pet fostering is more of a commitment than a hobby. If you are considering fostering a pet or two, you need to evaluate your situation to see if you are able to foster them. You need to have room in your home as well as time to care for them. Make sure that if you are fostering a pet as a hobby, your hobby is not interfering with your everyday life or causing problems between and others living near you.
