Question: light bruising discipline?
i have a 20 month old incredibly incorrigble boy. a real climber too. he’s got this new hobby going into the kitchen, climbing the dining chairs trying to get on top of dining table.
i headed for the kitchen calling him and i saw him already on top of the dining table. it really scared me! i grabbed him, down, pinched his leg, and yelled “NO!! don’t ever do that!”
i feel really bad because not only are his feelings hurt, but he has a small light bruise on the spot that i had pinched him. i didn’t mean to do that. that was also the first time i’ve ever done anything physical to him. its just that he really scared me.
i called my husband and told him what had happened, he told me not to worry, it was an accident. but i can’t help feeling really terrible for what i did, so bad that i gave him a small cup of ice cream and been babying him all day.
am i being too lenient?? whats another way to discipline a 20 month old other than hitting?
Answer: Time outs worked really well with my son when he was that age. We all make mistakes and the point is to learn from them. Don’t worry, but if you try doing time outs make sure you sit close by and monitor him. Oh yeah a lot of people believe that a time out should only last one minute for each year of age but I never bought that. Just go with your gut on the timing or explain that he needs to apologize before he can get out.
