Hang Gliding

Hang gliding is the hobby that most closely resembles flying on your own kite.

In hang gliding, a person controls an un-motorized glider, guiding it by changing his or her body positions and with minimal equipment. The rider will be hanging from the glider suspended by flexible straps and he controls the glider by shifting his or her body weight.

In the early days of hang gliding the rider (hang glider) used to be forced to start the glider from a cliff face and was not able to gain altitude without a lucky, strong wind bringing him or her higher. Short distances were the norm at that time.

However, with the advent of modern technology hang gliders are able to fly to much higher altitudes and further distances, even when launching off much smaller hilltops.

As Hang gliding is even now considered as a dangerous sport, pilots carry with them safety devices such as parachutes, helmets, safety rope and hook so that both the rider and the glider can be landed safely in case of any problems.

This is NOT one of the safer hobbies to take up on your own, it takes many hours of lessons before you are able to go on your first flight.

It is, however one of the most rewarding.
