What is Calligraphy as a hobby?
Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing.
When was Calligraphy developed?
Calligraphy was developed in the era before printing presses, when all documents had to be hand-copied. Within the Roman alphabet, a number of different calligraphic “fonts” were developed, such as Italic calligraphy (the letters tend to slant to the right) and Gothic calligraphy (commonly associated with German). Capital letters at the beginning of a section often received special attention and were ornate.
Additionally, calligraphers often illustrated manuscripts with beautiful drawings. The height of this type of manuscript development occurred in the monasteries of the Medieval era.
While calligraphy continued to be important all the way through the present, the invention of the printing press ended calligraphy as the sole way that books were created. There are calligraphy traditions in cultures that use other alphabet forms (e.g., Arabic) or ideographs (Chinese).
